Eleanor Coppola documentary ‘Making Marie Antoinette’ premieres at NYFF

The documentary ‘Making Marie Antoinette’ premiered at the New York Film Festival, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the production of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film. The documentary was compiled from approximately 80 hours of footage captured by Eleanor Coppola during the original filming at the Palace of Versailles.

Eleanor Coppola, who passed away in April 2024, used her handheld camera to record observational footage of the production, including interactions with cast members Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman. The film features narration by Diane Lane, who reads Eleanor’s contemporaneous diary entries. Sofia Coppola and editor Aaron Matthews completed the project to fulfill Eleanor’s vision of an observational film.
