Eleanor Coppola's Making Marie Antoinette documentary released
The documentary ‘Making Marie Antoinette’ offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film. The project serves as the final work of Eleanor Coppola, who passed away in 2024.
Eleanor Coppola captured approximately eighty hours of footage during the 57-day production in France, documenting the actors, crew, and sets. Sofia Coppola completed the project alongside editor Aaron Matthews. The film utilizes Eleanor’s diaries, read by Diane Lane, to reveal the pressures faced by a young Sofia Coppola while directing a 40-million-dollar production at the Palace of Versailles.
This documentary follows the tradition of Eleanor Coppola’s previous work, such as ‘Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse’, which documented the production of ‘Apocalypse Now’. It highlights the artistic collaboration within the Coppola family and the unique visual language used to reimagine the historical drama of Marie Antoinette.
