The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for Rajya Sabha elections for 12 seats across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. Polling is set for October 16, with results expected the same day.

In Uttar Pradesh, 10 seats are up for election. Based on current legislative strength, the BJP-led alliance is projected to secure eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party is expected to win two. This outcome could potentially leave the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) without any representation in Parliament, as its sole Rajya Sabha member, Ramji Gautam, is set to retire in November.

The election process includes a biennial election for 11 seats and a by-election for one seat in West Bengal, following the resignation of Rukmini Mallik. The election notification will be issued on September 29, with the deadline for nominations on October 6 and the final date for withdrawing candidacies on October 9.

To ensure a fair process, the Commission has mandated that voters use only specific violet-colored sketch pens provided by the returning officer to mark their preferences on the ballot papers.
