Election Commission of India announces Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha by-poll

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled a by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of L. Murugan. The vacancy became effective on October 14, 2026. Murugan’s term was originally intended to last until April 2, 2030.

The election schedule includes the issuance of notifications on October 26, with the deadline for filing nominations on November 2. Following scrutiny on November 3 and the withdrawal period ending November 5, voting is set for November 12 between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Vote counting will commence at 5:00 PM the same day, with the entire process expected to conclude by November 16.

To maintain the integrity of the preferential voting system, the ECI has mandated that electors use only specific violet-colored sketch pens supplied by the Returning Officer. The use of any other writing instruments is strictly prohibited to prevent tampering or invalidation of ballots.
