Election Commission of India orders special voter enrollment drive

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a special drive across 20 states and union territories to re-enroll eligible voters omitted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The initiative focuses on identifying left-out citizens, as well as registering first-time and young voters.

To facilitate this, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct house-to-house verifications, comparing current electoral rolls against pre-SIR lists. BLOs are tasked with identifying approximately 20 to 25 eligible voters per week, with the goal of completing the drive within one month.

In response to controversies regarding the SIR process, the ECI has removed the additional declaration requirement from Form 6 in states where the revision is complete. This simplifies the application process for new voters by returning to the standard statutory requirements.

The move follows reports of internal disagreements among Election Commissioners regarding the SIR and criticisms from opposition parties, who have alleged that the process led to the mass removal of eligible voters from draft rolls.
