Election Commissions in Bangladesh and India face political challenges

In Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has criticized the Election Commission, claiming it is unable to function as a constitutional institution due to political pressure. Following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin, Parwar stated that the party's request to deploy the army to ensure neutrality was rejected by the commission. Additionally, party officials filed nine specific complaints regarding the Thakurgaon-1 by-election, alleging violations of the code of conduct, including the misuse of religious institutions for campaigning and intimidation of voters.

In India, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and several unilateral decisions made by the commission. Represented by lawyer Menka Guruswami, the party seeks an expedited hearing. The legal challenge follows allegations that the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists has unfairly removed legitimate voters and that the Chief Election Commissioner has made critical decisions without consulting the other two election commissioners.
