Election Commissions in Bangladesh and India face scheduling and procedural developments

The Election Commission of Bangladesh has indicated that no local government elections will be held this year. Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar stated that the decision was made to prioritize the academic environment, as annual and public examinations for schools and colleges are scheduled between October and December. Additionally, recent floods and natural disasters in certain regions have disrupted educational schedules. The Commission aims to begin conducting elections for various city corporations, municipalities, and local councils starting in January, once major exams and religious holidays have concluded.

In India, former Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi has addressed reports of internal disagreements within the Election Commission regarding Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Quraishi noted that according to the 2023 Act, if commissioners cannot reach a consensus, decisions should be made by a majority vote. He emphasized that if two commissioners have formally objected to decisions regarding voter database management or name additions and deletions, the process used to resolve those disagreements must be transparent and legally sound.
