Election petitions move through courts in Uganda and Zambia

Legal challenges to recent election results are proceeding in Uganda and Zambia.

In Uganda, the High Court in Luwero has scheduled rulings for November 6 and 10, 2026, regarding election petitions in Luwero and Nakaseke districts. One petition, filed by National Unity Platform candidate Esther Nakawooya, challenges the victory of Sarah Najjuma. Nakawooya alleges irregularities including ballot stuffing, multiple voting, and altered results. The parties have agreed to proceed using documentary evidence and written submissions rather than calling witnesses.

In Zambia, Lufeyo Ngoma of the United Party for National Development is petitioning the Chipata High Court to nullify the Lumezi South election or order a recount. Ngoma is contesting the victory of Oliver Mwale of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity. The petition alleges vote buying, intimidation, and violence. Ngoma testified that individuals were allegedly given money and goods at a farm to influence their votes, though he noted a lack of photographic or video evidence to support the claim.
