Elections Alberta warns of voter registration misinformation

Elections Alberta has issued a formal warning regarding a surge in social media misinformation targeting the province’s voter registration processes and the Voterlink digital tool. Ahead of the October 19 referendum, rumors have circulated online claiming that voter records have been deleted or tampered with.

Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure categorically denied these claims, stating that no registrations have been removed from the List of Electors without a voter’s explicit consent. McClure emphasized that the Voterlink system remains safe and secure, noting that the tool cannot be used by third parties to delete registrations.

The agency warned that disinformation campaigns often intensify before major votes to undermine trust in technology, election staff, and the voting process, or to intimidate citizens into staying home. Officials advised Albertans to rely on credible sources and the official Elections Alberta website to verify their registration status.
