Elections Canada estimates $24 million cost for 2026 by-elections

Elections Canada estimates that by-elections held this year to replace outgoing Members of Parliament could cost taxpayers more than $24 million. While the cost of a single by-election varies based on location and duration, the average cost per election is approximately $2 million.

Currently, three by-elections have already taken place, with three more scheduled for August 31. With one seat in Quebec remaining vacant and five more resignations expected in the coming weeks, 2026 could see a total of 12 by-elections. This would be the highest annual number since 2017, when 11 by-elections cost an estimated $10 million.

Reports indicate that elections in the Greater Toronto Area tend to be more expensive due to higher venue rental and advertising costs. Additionally, inflation has driven up expenses related to printing, facilities, and information technology. For example, the Battle River—Crowfoot election cost $2.3 million, a figure attributed to inflation and a lengthy 49-day election period.
