Elections Canada reports 40% Indigenous voter turnout in 2025 election
A new report from Elections Canada reveals that more than 40 per cent of registered electors in Indigenous communities participated in the 2025 federal election. Participation rates varied significantly by community type: 50.9 per cent for Métis, 42.1 per cent for First Nations, and 30.2 per cent for Inuit communities.
Regional data showed the Yukon had the highest Indigenous voter turnout at 61.9 per cent, while Quebec recorded the lowest at 21.1 per cent. The report noted that historical mistrust and the legacy of policies requiring First Nations people to forfeit Indian status to vote continue to influence participation.
Logistical challenges were also noted, including a staff shortage in Nunavik that led to some polls closing early. Elections Canada also updated its methodology for this report, meaning the data cannot be directly compared to previous election cycles. Jennifer Laewetz, CEO of Paskwâw Strategies, noted that the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous voter turnout remains a critical issue for the federal government.
