ANO movement suffers major defeat in Czech Senate elections

The ANO movement, led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, suffered a major defeat in the Czech Senate elections, failing to secure any new seats and losing an existing mandate. Babiš described the results as ‘catastrophic’ and suggested the movement must undergo a restart and evaluate its regional organizations.

In contrast, the opposition secured its majority in the upper house. The STAN movement emerged as a primary winner, gaining 10 new seats and becoming the party with the highest number of newly won mandates. The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) also performed strongly, gaining seven new senators and maintaining its position as a leading Senate club. The Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL) also saw success with new appointments.

In local elections, Jan Picka was named mayor of Sokolov following a coalition agreement between STAN, ODS, and independent groups, while ANO moved into the opposition. In Hustopeče, a new coalition led by Richard Homola was announced to lead the city through 2030.
