Electoral authorities in Mexico and Peru address legal and systemic reforms

In Mexico, the National Electoral Institute (INE) hosted the 25th anniversary of the Association of Electoral Tribunals of the Mexican Republic (ATERM). During the event, officials emphasized the importance of local electoral tribunal autonomy to ensure legal certainty and citizen trust. Counselor Jorge Montaño Ventura noted that electoral justice faces increasingly complex challenges, while ATERM President Magali Anabel Arellano Córdova stressed that local justice must be strengthened through institutional cooperation rather than in isolation.

In Peru, the National Jury of Elections (JNE) has announced plans to reform the electoral system following controversies surrounding the case of Rafael López Aliaga. The JNE acknowledged existing regulatory gaps and contradictions within the current framework. Legal advisor Grecia Rentería stated that the organization intends to collaborate with the ONPE, Reniec, and civil society to review these norms. This reform effort is considered critical ahead of the regional and municipal elections scheduled for October 4, as legal rulings regarding candidate eligibility remain a pressing concern.
