Sandra Cuevas banned from public office for one year

The Administrative Justice Tribunal of Mexico City has sanctioned Sandra Cuevas, the former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, with a one-year ban from holding any public office. The ruling follows findings of abuse of functions and violations of due process during the implementation of ‘Operativo Diamante’ in 2023.

Between June and August 2023, the operation involved the removal of furniture, planters, and other items belonging to commercial establishments from public spaces to reclaim urban areas. The tribunal determined that these actions were carried out without following the established administrative procedures, such as the ‘Retiro de Obstáculos en Vía Pública’ manual, and without providing affected parties the right to a hearing or defense.

In addition to the ban on holding office, Cuevas is restricted from participating in public procurement, leasing, or service contracts for one year. Cuevas expressed her lack of regret on social media, stating, “I would do it all the same. I don't regret it.”
