Electoral disinformation tools and regulations emerge in Brazil and the UK
Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has implemented Siade, a digital tool designed to facilitate the reporting of electoral disinformation. The system allows users to anonymously report various forms of interference, including fake profiles impersonating electoral authorities, false information regarding voting locations, hate speech, and mass messaging via WhatsApp. Beyond simple falsehoods, the tool addresses identity theft of the institution and threats or incitement of violence against members of the Electoral Public Ministry and judicial staff.
In the United Kingdom, discussions are advancing regarding stricter regulations for political advertising to combat misleading information. The Reform Political Advertising movement is advocating for a code that would require candidates to provide reliable evidence for factual claims made in advertisements. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between commercial advertising, which is regulated by the Advertising Standards Authority, and political advertising, which currently lacks similar truth-in-advertising requirements.
