Electoral expert outlines 2026 regional election procedures

Tomás Alva, president of the Electoral Committee of the Colegio de Abogados de La Libertad, has provided guidance regarding the installation of polling stations for the 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections. He explained that if primary and substitute poll workers fail to appear, voters from the queue or nearby stations may be summoned to ensure the process continues.

Alva noted that under current interpretations of electoral regulations, a polling station that fails to install within the established timeframe could be declared null. Additionally, the National Jury of Elections (JNE) maintains that failure to fulfill poll worker duties results in fines.

Regarding election day restrictions, Alva emphasized that electoral propaganda is prohibited starting 24 hours before the vote. This includes the use of posters, flyers, or political insignia at or near polling locations. He also advised citizens to verify their specific voting ballots, as they vary depending on the regional, provincial, or district jurisdiction.
