Electoral experts urge Mexican authorities to address illegalities
The Institute for Studies for Democratic Transition (IETD) has called on Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE), the Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF), and local electoral institutes to address what it describes as “myopia” regarding illegalities. In a statement signed by 53 electoral experts, academics, and former counselors, the association urged authorities to restore legality ahead of the 2027 elections.
The experts warned against becoming “accomplices to flagrant violations of electoral regulations” and called for a constitutional interpretation that adheres to the spirit of the Magna Carta. The group expressed concern over political polarization and the erosion of democratic life, alleging that the federal government and the Morena party have fostered a sense of discouragement among citizens. They emphasized the need to build a broad network of citizens and civil organizations to safeguard the voting process in 2027.
