Electra performs first fixed-wing aircraft landing at Manhattan heliport

Electra has successfully conducted the first-ever fixed-wing aircraft takeoff and landing at Manhattan’s Downtown Skyport. Using its hybrid-electric EL2 demonstrator, the company showcased ultra-short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities within the confined urban environment of the heliport.

The EL2 utilizes blown-lift aerodynamics and a hybrid-electric propulsion system, allowing it to operate with as little as 100 to 150 feet of runway. This technology is intended to enable “Direct Aviation,” a model designed to connect passengers to diverse locations—such as heliports, barges, and parking lots—without the need for traditional large-scale runways.

According to Electra CEO Marc Allen, the demonstration serves as a precursor to the EL9 Ultra Short production model. The company aims to provide regional travel that combines the efficiency and range of fixed-wing aircraft with the accessibility of helicopters, potentially significantly reducing travel times between cities like New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
