Electric aircraft could enter European commercial service by 2030
Advancements in battery technology, electric motors, and aircraft design may enable the commercial operation of electric aircraft in Europe by 2030. According to analysis by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), electric aircraft with a range of up to 500 km could potentially serve approximately 25% of existing European flight routes, including connections between cities like London and Dublin or Rome and Sardinia.
German startup Vaeridion is currently developing a 9-seater electric aircraft and aims to obtain passenger certification by 2030. The company has already secured purchase commitments for 100 aircraft from various airlines and operators. Vaeridion estimates that future operating costs could fall below 0.5 euro per passenger per kilometer, a price point comparable to first-class train travel.
The shift toward electric aviation comes as European nations implement green policies, such as France's ban on certain short-haul domestic flights where rail alternatives exist. While small-capacity electric planes may not immediately compete with large commercial jets, they are expected to serve rural areas and island connections where rail infrastructure is unavailable.
