Electric bicycle tests highlight cargo and lightweight trekking models

Recent evaluations of electric bicycle models highlight advancements in both cargo and trekking categories. In the cargo bike sector, consumer preferences vary between single-track models, such as those from Riese & Müller, which offer maneuverability, and two-track models designed for transporting children. While many high-quality cargo bikes are not available through standard online retailers, experts emphasize the importance of high-quality components to withstand heavy loads. Notably, the Dutch brand Babboe issued recalls for thousands of bikes in 2024.

In the trekking e-bike category, a new class of lightweight models is emerging. These bikes utilize motors like the Bosch Performance Line SX to keep total weight just above 20 kilograms. In recent testing, the Kalkhoff Endeavour L Excite was named the winner. Weighing 21.7 kilograms, the Kalkhoff model features gravel bike tires for versatility on both asphalt and gravel, a Shimano XT 12-speed gear system, and a 400-watt-hour battery.
