Electric car software subscriptions and drafting test show new cost and energy dynamics

Major automotive manufacturers are increasingly charging subscription fees for features that are already built into electric vehicles. Mercedes‑Benz offers an “Acceleration Increase” upgrade for its EQE and EQS models at $60–$90 per month or a one‑time payment of up to $2,950, adding up to 80 extra horsepower. Tesla’s Full Self‑Driving package costs $99 monthly, and the company has removed the option for a one‑time purchase. BMW has also faced criticism for charging for heated seats that are hardware‑installed.

A separate test in Denmark examined the energy benefit of drafting behind a truck on a highway. Using a Mercedes‑Benz CLA 250+ with an 85 kWh battery, the study found a reduction of 0.8 kWh per 100 km (6.7 % lower electricity use) when driving directly behind a truck, translating to about 51 km extra range on a full charge.
