Electric dirt bikes drive growth in off-road recreation
The outdoor recreation sector in the United States is experiencing significant growth, with approximately 183 million people participating in 2025, an increase of nearly 30 million since 2019. While overall U.S. motorcycle sales fell by 7.6% in 2025, the dirt bike market has continued to expand.
Electric dirt bike models are credited with making off-road riding more accessible to new riders by addressing the maintenance and handling difficulties often associated with gas-powered engines. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis valued the outdoor recreation sector at $696.7 billion in 2024, representing 2.4% of the nation's GDP.
Motorcycles and ATVs represent the fourth-largest conventional outdoor recreation category in the U.S. Globally, the adventure travel sector is also rising, with Grand View Research forecasting an annual growth rate of 19% through 2033.
