Electric Picnic faces scrutiny over crowd safety and overcrowding

Electric Picnic festival organizers are facing scrutiny following reports of overcrowding and a crowd collapse during the event in Ireland. Attendees reported ‘total mayhem’ on Friday when pressure and overcrowding caused people to fall during the period preceding Armand Van Helden’s scheduled performance. The set was cancelled immediately to manage the situation.

Festival Republic boss Melvin Benn defended the festival’s safety measures, describing suggestions of necessary improvements as ‘bonkers’ and stating there was ‘no real drama’. Benn noted that security and medics were present and that the performance was halted as soon as the collapse was visible.

Former site manager Pearse Doherty, who is performing with The Saw Doctors this weekend, attributed the festival’s longevity to an early emphasis on quality. Doherty, who managed the site from 2012 to 2017, highlighted the festival's history in Stradbally and its evolution under Festival Republic.
