Electric Picnic organisers warned of overcrowding risks before Duke Dumont set
Records released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that Electric Picnic organisers were aware of “potentially significant overcrowding” risks hours before DJ Duke Dumont’s performance on Saturday night.
Festival Republic contacted Laois County Council twice on Saturday afternoon to request moving the set from the 16,720-capacity Electric Arena to the larger outdoor Main Stage. Organisers cited app data suggesting the artist’s popularity would exceed that of weekend headliners. Although the council confirmed that planning permission could accommodate an extended operating time of 2:30 a.m. on the Main Stage to facilitate safety, the relocation did not occur.
Duke Dumont ultimately performed in the Electric Arena, clashing with the festival’s main headliner, Gorillaz. As the tent reached capacity, festival management was forced to issue multiple notifications via the official mobile app instructing attendees not to approach the area.
