Electric scooter accidents increase in Sweden

The number of injuries involving electric scooters has risen significantly, with over 6,600 people injured last year. This represents an increase of 38 percent compared to the previous year, averaging 18 injuries per day.

Young people are disproportionately affected, with half of those seriously injured being under the age of 25. Key risk factors identified include alcohol consumption, lack of helmet use, and riding in road traffic environments, particularly during weekends and late-night hours.

In response to these trends, neurosurgeons have called for stricter regulations rather than outright bans. Proposed measures include lowering speed limits, mandatory helmet use, clear blood alcohol limits, and increased responsibility for rental companies. There are also calls to investigate technical solutions for sobriety checks during the rental process.
