Electric scooter accidents rise across Europe

Data from several European countries indicate a sharp rise in accidents involving electric scooters and micromobility devices.

In Austria, the number of accidents resulting in personal injury nearly doubled between 2023 and 2025. In Lower Austria alone, cases rose from 263 to 516. Experts note that small wheels and high centers of gravity increase instability, while alcohol consumption and a lack of helmet use—currently estimated at only one in ten users—exacerbate the severity of injuries. A recent incident in Feldkirchen involved a manipulated scooter capable of reaching 49 km/h, resulting in a serious head injury to a nine-year-old.

In Germany, ADAC research highlights that the number of injured persons has tripled over four years, with a notable increase in accidents among children and adolescents aged 10 to 18. Common causes include improper lane use, alcohol, and excessive speed, often leading to upper extremity or facial injuries.

In Hungary, the proportion of traffic accidents involving micromobility devices rose from 2.5% in 2024 to 7% in the first eight months of the current period. Authorities and insurance groups are calling for increased safety awareness and potential regulatory changes to address the growing risks, including fire hazards from charging and the lack of basic user skills.
