Electric short‑haul flights in Europe may launch by 2030

European start‑ups are racing to build electric or hybrid aircraft capable of flying up to 500 km, a range that EASA says would cover roughly a quarter of the continent’s routes. Potential corridors include London‑Dublin, Athens‑Santorini, Barcelona‑Ibiza, Nice‑Corsica and Rome‑Sardinia. France has already banned short‑haul flights where a rail alternative takes less than 2.5 hours, and Spain has proposed a similar restriction.

German start‑up Vaeridion is developing a nine‑seat electric aircraft that it aims to certify for passenger service by 2030. The company says it has secured pre‑orders for 100 aircraft and estimates operating costs of under €0.50 per passenger‑kilometre, comparable to first‑class rail fares. While the first generation will likely serve regional and rural routes that are not well served by major airlines, the technology is expected to reduce air‑ and noise‑pollution and cut dependence on imported jet fuel.

Industry experts, including Carlos López de la Osa of the European Federation for Transport & Environment, say rapid battery advances are turning what was once a distant dream into a near‑term reality, with commercial electric flights possibly appearing on Europe’s busiest short‑haul links within the next four years.
