Electric truck market projected for global surge by 2030
The global market for battery-electric trucks is projected to experience a significant surge starting in the early 2030s. According to a report by Carbon Tracker, falling costs are making electric models increasingly competitive with diesel. Once the total cost of ownership becomes lower for electric options, fleet demand is expected to accelerate rapidly across major markets, including Europe.
In China, rapid adoption has already enabled manufacturers to scale production and reduce costs, creating a foundation for global exports. Meanwhile, in Europe, new CO2 standards are driving electrification, though recent EU amendments have provided manufacturers more flexibility regarding zero-emission sales targets.
To address infrastructure challenges, such as the high cost of overhead electric lines, new technical approaches are being explored. While previous trials in Germany and Sweden faced hurdles regarding rollout and funding, Polish inventor Łukasz Wantuch has proposed the ‘Hybrid Connector’. This module is designed to sit between a standard diesel tractor unit and a semi-trailer, using a pantograph to draw power from overhead lines. This would allow existing diesel fleets to utilize electric highways without requiring permanent vehicle conversions.
