Electric vans lead UK cost-efficiency rankings for commercial vehicles
A study by Acorn Insurance reveals that electric vans now occupy all top 10 positions for the most cost-efficient commercial vehicles in the UK. The Kia PV5 Cargo was identified as the least expensive to operate, with estimated annual energy costs of £895 for a business traveling 12,000 miles.
However, the economic benefits of electrification are heavily dependent on charging methods. While home or depot charging costs approximately 7.46p to 9p per mile, relying on public rapid-charging facilities can increase costs to roughly 22p per mile. This disparity suggests that inadequate access to affordable infrastructure remains a significant barrier to widespread business adoption.
Individual business owners are already seeing these savings. For example, a Prestatyn-based businessman reported that switching from a diesel Ford Transit to a Kia PV5 electric van could save him over £2,000 annually in fuel costs, particularly as diesel prices approach £2 per litre.
