Electric vehicle adoption accelerates in Austria and Germany

Electric vehicle adoption is accelerating across Central Europe. In Austria, the number of battery-electric vehicles (BEV) on the road has surpassed 300,000. Data from July 2026 indicates that BEVs accounted for 27.39 percent of all new car registrations that month, with 7,073 new electric units registered. The growth rate is increasing; while it took 27 months to grow from 100,000 to 200,000 vehicles, the jump from 200,000 to 300,000 took only approximately 19 months.

In Germany, BEV registrations rose by 50.2 percent during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the previous year. According to the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, 446,615 pure electric cars were registered between January and July, representing 25.5 percent of the total new car market.

Market performance varies by manufacturer. In Germany, Volkswagen led BEV registrations with 59,573 units, followed by BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz saw an 84.8 percent increase in its BEV registrations, while Smart recorded a 114.6 percent increase. Conversely, Volkswagen's BEV registrations saw a slight decrease of 3.3 percent. Among import brands, Skoda led with 43,084 units, followed by Tesla and Seat. Additionally, BYD saw a significant increase of 322.8 percent in alternative drive registrations.
