Electric vehicle adoption requires home preparation and infrastructure considerations
The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) involves both lifestyle changes and technical preparations. Homeowners considering a switch should evaluate their property for suitable off-street parking, such as a driveway or garage, to ensure charging cables do not create trip hazards or cross public paths. It is also recommended to check the home's electrical system, consumer unit, and main electrical supply to ensure they can handle the additional load of a charger.
Beyond infrastructure, EVs offer distinct operational advantages, including immediate acceleration and quieter driving experiences. Maintenance costs for EVs can be 30% to 50% lower than internal combustion engine vehicles due to having fewer moving parts. While the US federal government ended the $7,500 EV purchase incentive last year, several states, such as New York, have implemented their own subsidies to support adoption. Global EV sales saw a 35% increase in the second quarter of this year, driven in part by rising gasoline prices.
