Electric vehicle battery aging linked to aggressive driving styles

A study analyzing data from 15 electric vehicles in Guangzhou has revealed that driving style significantly impacts battery aging. By using machine learning to categorize drivers into five distinct styles, researchers found that aggressive driving—characterized by frequent high-current demands from rapid acceleration and sudden torque usage—causes much higher stress on the battery.

In the most aggressive driving group, the average effective current intensity was 66.02 A, compared to 20.56 A for the most economical drivers. The short-term aging stress indicator for the most extreme driving style was found to be 18.4 times higher than for economical drivers. Switching from an aggressive to an economical driving style, while keeping all other conditions constant, reduced the short-term aging load by 91.3 percent.
