Electric vehicle battery health and winter performance factors

Maintaining electric vehicle (EV) performance requires understanding battery health and seasonal environmental impacts. An analysis by Canadian technology company Geotab of over 22,000 EVs found that batteries lose an average of 2.3% of their capacity annually. However, this average does not reflect individual vehicle conditions, which are influenced by age, battery design, climate, charging habits, and temperature.

When purchasing a used EV, the remaining range shown on the dashboard may not accurately reflect the actual battery capacity, as the calculation is influenced by recent driving style, temperature, and climate control use. Experts recommend requesting a detailed 'State of Health' (SoH) report rather than relying on dashboard estimates or mobile apps.

Cold weather also significantly impacts EV efficiency. Laboratory tests by the U.S. Department of Energy showed that energy economy at -7°C can be nearly 40% worse than at 25°C. Drivers are advised to manage tire pressure, utilize pre-heating functions, and optimize charging schedules to mitigate the effects of winter temperatures.
