Electric vehicle battery lifespan and degradation factors

Electric vehicle (EV) battery degradation is a gradual process that does not necessarily indicate imminent battery failure. While driving range may decrease over time due to declining capacity, total battery failure is relatively rare in modern models.

Data from the U.S. Department of Energy, analyzing approximately 15,000 electric vehicles, indicates that only 1.5% of vehicles required battery replacement due to failure, excluding those replaced via recalls. For models produced between 2016 and 2023, this failure rate was even lower, at under 1%.

Battery lifespan is influenced by climate and usage. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates a lifespan of 12-15 years in temperate climates and 8-12 years in extreme weather. Additionally, a Geotab analysis of over 22,700 vehicles across 21 models found that average battery capacity declines by about 2.3% per year.

Factors such as ambient temperature, air conditioning use, high speeds, aggressive acceleration, and terrain can temporarily reduce driving range without signifying a broken battery.
