Electric vehicle technology advances in charging and storage
Developments in electric vehicle (EV) technology are reshaping energy systems and logistics. Bidirectional charging, or Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), allows EVs to act as mobile storage units, feeding energy back into buildings and the grid to balance supply and demand, particularly with renewable sources.
Efficiency remains a critical concern. Testing by ADAC reveals significant energy losses when charging via standard household sockets, with losses reaching up to 24.2 percent in some models. In contrast, using a wallbox at higher power levels (11 or 22 kW) keeps losses below 7 percent. Experts recommend wallboxes over household outlets for both safety and efficiency.
In the heavy transport sector, battery swapping is emerging as a competitor to megawatt charging. In Australia, Janus Electric has successfully implemented a system that swaps truck batteries in minutes, minimizing downtime. Meanwhile, the solar energy market is seeing a boom in integrated battery storage systems, which improve the economic viability of photovoltaic installations by increasing self-consumption.
Retailers like Lidl are also expanding infrastructure, offering EV charging stations at hundreds of locations to integrate charging with consumer activities.
