Electric vehicle charging infrastructure faces intercity challenges in Turkey

A study by Dr. Taner Çokyaşar from Texas A&M University highlights significant challenges regarding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for intercity travel in Turkey. By analyzing 3 million potential routes and 9,641 EPDK-licensed charging stations, the research found that 99.7% of trips could not be completed if drivers adhered to battery preservation limits (maintaining charge between 20% and 80%). While routes can be completed by using the full battery capacity from 100% down to 10%, doing so compromises long-term battery health.

In contrast to these intercity infrastructure gaps, local initiatives in Narlıdere are showing success in urban settings. Since December 2024, Narlıdere Municipality has provided 17 charging points across seven locations. This local network has served over 5,000 users, providing approximately 419,965 kWh of energy. This local infrastructure has enabled EVs to travel over 2.6 million kilometers, preventing an estimated 315 to 350 tons of CO2 emissions and reducing fossil fuel consumption by over 170,000 liters.
