Global electric vehicle sales decline 2% in September
Global electric vehicle (EV) sales fell 2% in September, ending a six-month growth streak. While year-to-date volumes have risen 3% to 15.5 million units, regional performance shows significant divergence.
Europe experienced record-breaking growth, with sales rising 39% year-over-year to nearly 600,000 units, driven by strong consumer demand and policy support. In contrast, North American sales plummeted 44%, largely attributed to the expiration of federal tax credits in the United States. China also saw an 18% decline in domestic sales, prompting manufacturers to focus more on export markets.
In individual markets, Canada reported a 55% increase in zero-emission vehicle sales for August, though experts suggest the pace may not meet federal emissions targets. Ireland saw a 54% jump in private EV registrations in September, while Australia's demand remains supported by government discounts aimed at mitigating cost-of-living pressures and fuel price volatility.
