EU electric vehicle market reaches record share as BYD surpasses Tesla

The European Union automotive market is experiencing a significant shift toward electric mobility. In 2025, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached a record 17.3 percent share of all new passenger car registrations in the EU. This trend accelerated in the first half of 2026, with the BEV share rising to 20.7 percent.

In August 2026, the market showed further dynamism. Preliminary data indicates that electric cars accounted for 31 percent of new registrations in the EU. In Germany, the BEV share for August 2026 reached 32.4 percent, with the country remaining the largest market by volume. Regional leaders in electric vehicle adoption include Denmark (67.8 percent), the Netherlands (40.2 percent), and Malta (37.6 percent), while Norway remains a global outlier with over 95 percent market share.

A major shift in manufacturer competition is also occurring. Chinese automaker BYD has seen massive growth, with registrations in the EU, UK, and EFTA regions increasing by 128 percent in August. This growth has allowed BYD to surpass Tesla in certain market segments, as Tesla’s market share in the same region stood at 1.9 percent in August. Additionally, Chinese brands collectively achieved a record 12 percent market share of new passenger car sales in Europe during August, driven in part by the popularity of hybrid models which are not subject to the same EU tariffs as fully electric vehicles.
