Electric vehicle fire in Brazil highlights charging safety risks
A fire involving a BYD Dolphin electric vehicle in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, has prompted safety warnings regarding improper charging practices. Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been caused by the inadequate use of an extension cord and a portable charger left inside the vehicle, which could lead to overheating and short circuits.
Clemente Gauer of the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE) noted that while the fire was significant, the visible explosions seen in footage were related to the airbag detonators rather than the vehicle's electrical system or battery.
To ensure safety, experts recommend avoiding the use of extension cords, which cannot support the high electrical current required for EV charging. They also advise against charging vehicles in enclosed spaces and suggest prioritizing the installation of professional, certified wallbox chargers connected to dedicated electrical circuits in accordance with technical standards.
