Electric vehicle growth creates repair challenges for small workshops

The rapid transition to electric vehicles is creating significant challenges for traditional automotive repair shops. In Denmark, where electric vehicle registrations have surpassed 676,000, many small local workshops are unable to service newer models due to the complexities of high-voltage systems.

Working on electric vehicles requires specialized safety training, insulated tools, and updated diagnostic equipment to manage voltages that can reach up to 800 volts. The financial burden is substantial; safety equipment alone can cost between 5,000 and 6,000 euros. In Spain, industry data indicates that only 30 percent of workshops are prepared for basic electric vehicle tasks, and only 22 percent possess professional charging stations on-site.

Regulatory requirements are also playing a role. In Denmark, independent workshops must hold SERMI certification to access essential manufacturer data for security and theft-related repairs, such as key programming and software updates affecting safety functions.
