Electric vehicle growth impacts fuel sales in Uruguay
In Uruguay, electric vehicles (EVs) reached a 69% market share in September, marking a significant increase from 27% in September 2025. This shift is driving a substantial decline in fuel consumption, with fuel sales dropping by 20% in the metropolitan area and Maldonado.
Daniel Añón, president of the Union of Gasoline Sellers of Uruguay (Unvenu), noted that the highest concentration of EVs is in high-purchasing-power areas such as Punta Carretas and the coast leading to Punta del Este, where half of the vehicles are now electric. Unvenu has proposed that the government equalize taxes between electric and combustion vehicles, including Imesi, patent, and insurance costs, to mitigate the impact on fuel sellers.
