Electric vehicle interest rises in US despite market share shifts

Consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is rising in the United States despite a recent dip in market share. According to the HERE-SBD EV Index 2026, more American buyers are expressing interest in EVs compared to last year, driven largely by improvements in charging infrastructure, range, and charging speeds. While EV market share fell to 5.37% following the removal of tax credits, data from the Alliance for Automotive Innovation indicates that 12% of drivers now intend to switch to electric regardless of price, a figure that has doubled from 6% the previous year.

In the specialized motorhome sector, electric technology faces unique challenges. While models like the CityFreighter and Vöhringer Evolve have demonstrated ranges of approximately 248 miles, manufacturers struggle to balance vehicle size with battery weight and cost. Previous attempts, such as Winnebago’s eRV prototypes, faced high production costs and limited range. Market research suggests RV buyers prioritize long-distance capability, making the transition from gasoline or diesel platforms difficult for secondary vehicle manufacturers.
