Electric vehicle market faces graphite shortages and North American sales decline
The electric vehicle (EV) market is facing dual challenges of supply shortages and fluctuating demand. A significant shortage of natural graphite is looming as EV and hybrid sales increase. Graphite is a critical component in lithium-ion batteries, often making up a larger volume than lithium. Projections suggest the United States could face a 1.2 million metric ton shortfall of natural graphite by 2030 due to production failing to keep pace with demand.
In North America, EV sales saw a 27% year-over-year decline in July following the expiration of federal incentives. This drop coincided with a rise in vehicle prices as automakers reduced discounts. The slowdown has impacted manufacturing, notably leaving a General Motors and LG battery plant in Ohio idle for seven months. Despite these regional challenges, global sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids rose by 9% compared to the previous year.
