Electric vehicle market share rises in Europe as Tesla Model 3 leads Spain
The European automotive market is seeing a significant shift toward electrification. In the European Union, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached a cumulative market share of 21.7% between January and August, matching the share of gasoline vehicles. Specifically, in August, BEVs accounted for 27.7% of all new car registrations, representing more than one in four vehicles sold.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also showed growth, reaching a 10% market share for the year-to-date period. When combined with pure electric vehicles, plug-in models accounted for 38.8% of monthly registrations in August.
In Spain, the Tesla Model 3 emerged as the top-selling vehicle for September with 2,519 registrations, marking a 46.5% increase compared to the previous year. This performance placed the Model 3 ahead of the Toyota Corolla, which held the second position. Tesla's total sales in Spain for the month reached 3,701 units.
