Electric vehicle market trends diverge between US and Europe
The electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing a significant divergence between North American and European consumers. In the United States, EV sales fell 30.7% through the first nine months of 2026, resulting in a 6% market share. This decline follows the expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit in September 2025 and a shift in regulatory policy under the Trump administration, which eased fuel-efficiency requirements.
Conversely, Europe is seeing increased adoption. In the United Kingdom, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached 26% of the market in September 2026, narrowly trailing internal combustion engine (ICE)-only vehicles, which held 28%. The UK market remains dominated by hatchbacks, while manufacturers like Volkswagen, Ford, BYD, and Mercedes-Benz continue to compete for market share.
