Electric vehicle markets face depreciation and infrastructure challenges

The global electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing rapid growth alongside emerging challenges regarding vehicle depreciation and infrastructure readiness. In China, the value of a three-year-old EV dropped from 46% to 42% of its original price by the end of 2025, driven by rapid technological advancements and falling new car prices. Approximately 80% of resellers in that region have reportedly begun rejecting models older than five years.

Brazil is seeing a significant rise in EV interest, particularly for Chinese brands, with searches for such models increasing by 250% in recent years. However, the Brazilian market faces potential hurdles similar to those seen internationally, including the depreciation of used vehicles, the need for specialized high-voltage maintenance in workshops, and the pressure to expand charging infrastructure.

In Europe, September 2026 data shows electric vehicles reached a record 30% market share. Chinese manufacturers accounted for 14.5% of the market. Meanwhile, Tesla reported its best month of 2026 with a 71% growth in registrations compared to the previous year, led by the Model Y and Model 3.
