Global electric vehicle markets see rapid growth and shifting infrastructure needs
The global electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing significant shifts in adoption, infrastructure needs, and consumer trends. In India, the EV market is entering a rapid growth phase, with registrations increasing 25 percent in FY2026. Two-wheelers and three-wheelers dominate this market, making up 91 percent of registrations. Tata Motors has seen its EV bookings triple in six months, though production capacity remains a challenge. Meanwhile, luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz are seeing high EV penetration among affluent buyers.
In Australia, battery-powered EV sales nearly tripled in the first half of 2026, raising concerns that the charging network may struggle to keep pace with demand. In Spain, the automotive market is seeing a rise in electrified vehicle registrations, which grew 27 percent year-on-year in August, accounting for over a quarter of total sales.
On a global scale, the International Energy Agency projects that electricity demand for EV charging could exceed 1,500 terawatt-hours by 2035. In Canada, the cost gap for repairing EVs versus internal combustion engine vehicles is narrowing to a record low, even as trade tensions pose potential risks to part availability.
