Electric vehicle demand rises amid high fuel costs
The European automotive market is experiencing significant shifts driven by rising fuel costs and the energy transition. In France, high diesel prices are pushing consumers toward electric vehicles. Data from La Centrale indicates that searches for used electric cars surged by over 200% following geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, contributing to a price increase for used electric models, which now average 25,593 euros.
Market trends show that when diesel prices exceed 2 euros per liter, the share of used electric vehicle sales rises significantly. However, the used market faces challenges; while demand is high, stocks of affordable electric models, such as the Renault Zoé, have declined sharply.
Environmental concerns also persist, as a study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) found that plug-in hybrids in Europe emitted, on average, 4.6 times more CO2 in real-world conditions than their official homologation values. Additionally, researchers are exploring more sustainable mobility solutions, such as a proposed lightweight urban electric vehicle costing under 15,000 euros with a 200 km range, designed to meet the needs of the majority of daily European trips.
