Electric vehicle range challenges and emerging battery technologies

Current electric vehicle production has not yet achieved the marketing promise of a 1,000 kilometer range under the WLTP standard. The Lucid Air Grand Touring holds the current record with an official 960 kilometers, followed by the Mercedes EQS 450+ at 926 kilometers. However, real-world driving conditions, such as highway speeds and temperature fluctuations, can reduce these figures by 25 to 35 percent.

To address range and energy density concerns, researchers are developing new battery chemistries. Potential advancements include silicon-based batteries, which can increase range by 20 to 30 percent compared to graphite anodes, though they face durability issues due to material swelling. Other areas of development include sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur, lithium-air, and solid-state technologies to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
