Electric vehicle refrigerants and consumer adoption trends
The automotive industry faces environmental challenges regarding air conditioning refrigerants. While the R1234yf refrigerant was adopted as an eco-friendly alternative to R134a due to its lower global warming potential, it poses a different risk. Upon atmospheric release, it converts into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a persistent ‘forever chemical’ that can contaminate soil and water. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has identified TFA as a substance that may negatively impact human health, including potential damage to the thyroid, liver, and fertility.
A study by automotive supplier Hanon estimates that annual TFA emissions could exceed 9,000 tons by 2036. Because existing vehicle systems are designed for specific refrigerants, the transition to alternatives like CO2 (R744), which does not produce TFA, cannot be implemented immediately for all current fleets.
Separately, consumer adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) remains influenced by perceived barriers. A survey conducted by Volkswagen and E.ON suggests that lack of experience contributes to skepticism. While EVs offer benefits such as lower operating costs and smoother driving, they require changes in user habits, particularly regarding charging infrastructure and home charging capabilities.
